Program details

Overview

Anthropology majors learn to observe closely, think critically and write about human cultures. The curriculum spans cultural anthropology, archaeology and biological anthropology, starting with an introductory course in each. Students can gain hands-on research experience alongside faculty on fieldwork and museum collection projects in bioarchaeology and archaeology. Cultural anthropology courses link research to present-day concerns such as health, urbanisation and geopolitics. The major requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 in the major and leads to a wide range of careers or further graduate study. Students complete the Mason Core general education requirements together with the major's courses, and the catalog lists each requirement, policy and contact for the department. Prospective students are encouraged to meet an academic advisor early so that course planning fits their goals and any outside commitments.
