Overview

The Computer and Information Systems certificate at the SouthWest College for the Deaf is a one-year program that prepares students for entry-level computer work. Prerequisite courses may add time depending on a student's background, so students should meet with an advisor early. Students learn to operate computers, prepare programs for business use, find and correct errors in programs, and install and use common software packages. Coursework includes business computer applications, software, and related information technology classes drawn from several subject areas, which gives students a practical mix of office and technical skills. Typical entry-level roles include computer clerk, computer operator, and technical or applications support specialist. Students who lack sign communication or keyboarding proficiency may be asked to take additional courses first.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Prerequisites are ENGL 0315 and MATH 0401, or an interview with the CIS/Business Coordinator. Sign communication or keyboarding courses may be required.
