BA/BS in English Language and Literature, General

The English major at Iona University leads to a Bachelor of Arts and centers on how language shapes our view of the world. Students read literature and relate it to their own experience, drawing on history, art, philosophy, religion and science along the way. Graduates are known for analyzing and synthesizing information and expressing ideas clearly, abilities employers value. Coursework builds skills in analyzing texts and presenting ideas in writing and speech, and encourages creative, independent and ethical thinking. Faculty offer individual mentoring, and students can take internships that apply classroom learning in professional settings across many industries. The major also fits students who plan to teach, write or continue to graduate study in the humanities. It rewards close reading and careful, persuasive writing.
