AA/AS in American Sign Language

This two-year applied degree in ASL-English interpretation prepares people for careers as sign language interpreters. Most full-time interpreting positions in Virginia are found in public K-12 schools, where a state quality assurance screening level, a specified performance rating or national certification is the minimum. Graduates may also look at freelance and contract work, including video relay and video remote interpreting. Outcomes include applying the code of professional conduct, using a structured decision framework, Demand Control Schema among them, in real situations, and interpreting accurately between English and ASL in both directions. Applicants enter through general college curricular admission. The 2026-2027 Reynolds catalog gives the full requirements, and an advisor can help with planning. Graduates are encouraged to review the listed outcomes and speak with program faculty about how the coursework fits their goals.
