AA/AS in American Sign Language

Long Beach City College offers a transfer-oriented sequence in ASL and the cultural life of the Deaf community. Learners build conversational signing skills while studying the history, values and social life of Deaf communities. The department notes that becoming fluent demands multiple years of study and regular practice, as with any other language. The associate in arts degree lists its required courses and a program mapper to help students plan each term. Graduates and transfer students look toward work such as audiology, child care, counseling, psychology, social work and speech-language pathology. The college career center helps students match interests with internships and next steps. Students can meet with counselors to map out an educational plan, and the college career center helps them explore internships and goals that fit their strengths. A program mapper and a list of required courses are published for each award, so students can plan their terms ahead of time.
