BA/BS in Anthropology

Anthropology at Macalester looks at human diversity in a connected world. Topics reach from migration and global health to human rights, human origins, museum studies and development, and the department also considers nonhuman primates. Seminar-style classes build confidence in presenting and leading discussion, while a methods-focused curriculum teaches interviewing, observing participants and designing research. Students then carry out their own fieldwork. The major builds in time studying away, in the United States or abroad, and a summer research fellowship supports those who want to continue that work. Internship sites near campus include the Minnesota Historical Society, the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota and Como Zoo. Students have regularly earned national recognition for their writing and research, and the department maintains a lounge and computer lab with free tea and coffee.
