Program details

Overview

Chemistry at Macalester is presented as the central science, a foundation for biology, physics, neuroscience, psychology and even computer science. Students learn how matter works at the molecular level, with applications from personal care products to mental health treatments to farming practices. Professors guide hands-on work with instruments such as a liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer and a differential scanning calorimeter. Ties to the state university in Minneapolis open up more specialized resources, and the Twin Cities host many biotechnology and materials engineering companies that offer internships. The department hosts a seminar schedule, an honors program and study-away opportunities, and it celebrates alumni achievements, including a graduate who became a university professor and Guggenheim Fellow. Current students can find a department map and a guide on where to start.
