The classics major and minor sit within a program on the ancient Mediterranean and Middle East that links the ancient world to present-day questions. Students study how people have debated, dreamed and governed across millennia, and they learn Latin, Biblical Hebrew and Arabic, in both classical and modern forms.
The curriculum builds skills in argument, precise writing, language learning and teamwork. Graduates have received Fulbright grants, entered medical and law programs, and joined organizations such as the World Bank, the Brookings Institution, plus the Smithsonian. Students also intern at museums, historical societies and nonprofits.
Community life includes the Arabic House for immersion living, weekly language lunches open to all, and a long-running end-of-semester cookie party. Newcomers can sample a language course, the broad Classics 101 survey, or an introduction to archaeology.
