BA/BS in Fine and Studio Arts

Art and Art History at Macalester joins studio practice with the study of art history. Instructors both make art and conduct scholarship, and they share their professional networks with students, and no earlier experience is needed for the introductory courses. Students can study away in places such as Florence, Copenhagen, southern France, Budapest and Australia, compete for funded research trips to Europe or Turkey, and take courses in fashion design, animation or product design at neighboring partner schools. The on-campus Law Warschaw Gallery shows work by visiting and student artists, and exhibitions are free. The Twin Cities offer galleries, major museums and internships at institutions such as the Minneapolis Institute of Art and a book arts center. Senior majors receive around-the-clock access and a dedicated studio. Graduates work in museums, design studios and nonprofits or continue to graduate degrees in the practice or scholarship of art.
