Genetics at Ohio Wesleyan explores how inherited information shapes development, health, and even parts of behavior and personality. Because DNA is shared by all life while every organism carries its own variations, the field helps explain relationships between species and can lead to advances for health, society, and the environment.
The major builds on biological principles and adds specialized courses focused on genes within molecules, cells, and whole organisms. Students learn to recognize, change, or manage the basic properties of living cells.
Graduates may head toward medicine and other health careers, genetic counseling, biotechnology, gene therapy, pharmaceutical work, or advanced laboratory research. It is one of several biological sciences majors offered together. Students can also seek a Theory-to-Practice Grant, which can support original research, an internship, or a creative project in any country.
