Overview

The undergraduate major combining speech-language pathology and audiology at Old Dominion University introduces students to normal speech, language and hearing processes and to the identification of communication disorders. It also covers the basics of clinical assessment and treatment. The degree needs a minimum of 120 credits. Because national standards do not allow bachelor's graduates to work as speech-language pathologists or audiologists, the program serves mainly as preparation for the university's master's program in speech-language pathology, for audiology programs elsewhere and for other professional graduate study. Students declare the major after a year of coursework at the university with a grade point average of at least 2.5, and they must keep that average in major courses. General education choices are set to satisfy national certification, and a sign language course is part of the major.
