Program details

Overview

The Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering trains students to carry out original, independent research and the School of Engineering confers it. Learning outcomes include applying advanced engineering, mathematics, and science to complex problems, adapting to emerging technologies, understanding the ethical and societal effects of engineering solutions, and presenting findings orally, visually, and in writing. New students are assigned a temporary academic advisor and meet before registering for their second quarter to plan the coursework that prepares them for the preliminary exam. Departmental rules supplement the school's general academic regulations, which govern admission and degree requirements. The page also outlines how the preliminary exam fits into the early part of study, giving new doctoral students a clear sense of the sequence from advising to examination and then to dissertation research.
