PhD in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering

This doctoral program in Electrical and Computer Engineering is offered through the School of Engineering. Students pursue advanced coursework and original research that culminates in a doctoral thesis. A written preliminary examination tests the depth and breadth of readiness for doctoral-level work in the major, and only students who pass it may attempt the oral qualifying examination. Students who are already completing a master's degree on campus may take the preliminary exam early with their advisor's approval, and the exam can be repeated just once at the thesis advisor's discretion. Every doctoral student is expected to secure a full-time faculty member as thesis advisor, ideally before the preliminary examination. Because the degree is research focused, candidates are expected to show sustained independent scholarship, and the department provides details on timelines, examinations, and faculty supervision to help students plan each stage of their progress.
