Overview

The doctorate in computer science and engineering is a research degree awarded by the School of Engineering. It recognizes mastery of the field and the capacity to investigate engineering problems independently and contribute new knowledge. Work toward the degree combines original research, a written thesis, and further study of engineering, mathematics, and related sciences, all guided by the department under the school's supervision. Students sit a written preliminary exam on three core areas (architecture of computers, algorithms, and operating systems) and must pass each one. A failed attempt may be repeated just one time. Each student works with a faculty advisor, and the Engineering Graduate Bulletin explains the general admission and degree requirements. Graduates of the doctoral track are trained to work independently on difficult problems in computing and engineering, and the department publishes further guidance on its faculty advisors for incoming doctoral candidates.
