The Department of History works to develop a questioning, evidence-based grasp of how societies, then and now, have functioned so that students become informed, thoughtful and active participants in the world. Historical inquiry is presented as a meaningful part of a student's humanistic education and as central to the college's highest intellectual aims.
Students plan their course sequence with a major worksheet provided by the department, and requirements and course options are listed on its program page. Coursework asks them to weigh sources, compare interpretations and build arguments about change over time.
The skills of research, analysis and clear writing prepare graduates for law, education, public service, journalism, museums and archives, business and graduate study. The major suits students who enjoy asking why events unfolded as they did and how the past informs present choices.
