BA/BS in Area Studies

Undergraduates in this Bachelor of Arts track in SMU's Dedman College (humanities and sciences) design a cross-disciplinary course of study centered on how people live and interact worldwide. The aim is to combine a broad view of global affairs with detailed knowledge of one geographic area. Each student picks a regional concentration. The options are Europe; Asia; Latin America together with Iberia; and the Middle East together with Africa. Regional classes are taken together with courses on issues that cross borders, so a graduate understands both the wider international picture and the culture and geography of a particular place. Students who prefer a smaller workload can pursue a minor in the subject instead of the full major. The college's program page also directs prospective students to guidance for freshmen, transfers and applicants from abroad, and to material on costs, aid, sample courses, campus organizations and community involvement.
