Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism is taught in the Division of Journalism at SMU Meadows School of the Arts. Its curriculum was reworked with input from industry figures and scholars, and it centers on learning by doing.
Students report, write, edit and design stories, produce audio and video, and reach audiences through social media. Majors study multimedia journalism across broadcast, print and online formats, and a required student media lab reinforces the hands-on approach. Participation in SMU Student Media adds further practice.
Specializations include sports journalism, which combines reporting and multimedia storytelling with data skills and play-by-play commentary. Alumni have gone on to roles at national news organizations and magazines. A minor in journalism is also offered.
