BA/BS in Education, General

This Bachelor of Science sits within the teaching and learning department of SMU's Simmons school for education and human development. It supports students seeking credentials to teach at the elementary or secondary level, or across all grades from early childhood to twelfth grade. Because the major does not cover subject content on its own, every student must add a second major that supplies those courses. Graduates who finish the requirements are put forward for the educator certification tests run by the Texas state board. Passing results open the way to teaching posts in public and private schools. The same preparation can lead elsewhere. Some graduates continue into further study of social science subjects, and others follow informal education paths with nonprofit groups. A minor in the subject is also offered. The school presents the degree as useful for people who may not plan a conventional classroom career but want instructional and leadership grounding.
