Program details

Overview

Environmental Systems Engineering prepares Stanford students to build sustainable design and practice into natural and built systems. The focus is on infrastructure for buildings, water supply and coastlines. The courses are multidisciplinary. Students combine fundamentals in mathematics, science and engineering with the tools expected of an engineer, then choose among three focus areas for deeper study: coastal, freshwater or urban environments. A capstone experience completes the program. Compared with the Civil Engineering degree's environmental and water concentration, this major follows a more focused curriculum. It leads to a Bachelor of Science and prepares students for consulting, industry and graduate school. The School of Engineering offers it, with a minor, honors and a coterminal option listed. Further program details are published in the Stanford Bulletin.
