The music major blends making music with scholarly study. Composition, conducting, performance, history, ethnomusicology and theory sit beside cognitive science, intermedia work and music technology, and all feed a shared curriculum that balances breadth of musical experience with depth in one chosen area.
Once the shared core is done, covering music theory, historical study, analysis, writing and hands-on musicianship, students may specialize in one of five areas: performing, conducting, composing, historical and theoretical study, or the blend of music with science and technology. Joint majors, a flexible minor and an honors option are also available.
The major sits within the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University, an undergraduate campus in California. The Stanford Bulletin carries the official requirements, and the major page lists suggested introductory courses for students who want to sample the field before declaring.
