BA/BS in Music

Music majors at Stony Brook receive a balanced grounding in performing, composing, theory and history, preparing them for professional work or graduate school. Award-winning faculty teach them, and students may perform in groups ranging from orchestra and wind band to jazz groups and the marching band. Future composers and historians use computer and electronic sound studios, and learn from specialists in composition, musicology and ethnomusicology. Sample courses look at popular music in society, opera and twentieth-century music, plus sound structures. Besides applying to the university, candidates complete a distinct music major application. The program belongs to the College of Arts and Sciences. This description is based on the official university page for the program. Applicants should confirm current requirements, dates and costs with the department before applying.
