Computer engineering at UMass Amherst covers software platforms of great complexity through to the chips behind the next wave of computing. Graduates work in applied machine learning, internet-connected devices, cloud computing and cybersecurity.
The curriculum builds a foundation in multi-language programming, computer architecture and hardware design, and in computer systems such as microcontrollers and single-board computers. Students also practice the engineering design process through prototyping.
Electives in networks, algorithms, architecture and augmented or virtual reality allow students to tailor the degree. Practical experience comes from makerspaces, hackathons, team and individual projects, and a capstone design course. First-year applicants have an early action date and a regular decision date for fall.
Prospective students can consult the department about advising, course sequences and opportunities beyond the classroom, then apply through the university's undergraduate admissions process. Visiting campus is a good way to see the facilities first-hand.
