The graduate program in sociology at Utah State, based on the Logan campus in the College of Arts and Sciences, leads to an MS and a PhD. It draws on demographic, organizational, economic-political and psychological viewpoints to study large national and worldwide questions.
Students pair core courses on theory and research design with training in a chosen specialty: environment and community, demography, or states and markets. The department is especially strong in the sociology of the environment and natural resources, and it collaborates with colleagues in water engineering and other sciences.
Teaching preparation is emphasized, including a required seminar for doctoral students and chances to teach their own courses. MS applicants ideally hold a sociology or related social science degree, and those from other majors need core training in methods, theory and statistics. Applications are due by December 20 for fall.
