This endorsement lets practicing teachers add special education to a Michigan teaching license. Candidates concentrate on either autism spectrum disorder or cognitive impairment, and the course list focuses on students with moderate or significant support needs, collaboration, transitions and supportive learning environments.
The endorsement-only route applies to people who already hold a teaching certificate. A first endorsement in the area needs roughly thirty graduate credits, while second endorsements may need fewer, so candidates are invited to meet an advisor. All work follows College of Education and Graduate School rules. The college's educator preparation holds national CAEP accreditation.
Courses in the cognitive impairment plan include history and ethics of teaching students with disabilities, transitions, consultation, observation and assessment. Prospective candidates can apply online, request information or contact the listed program faculty for guidance.
