BA/BS in Anthropology

The anthropology program at Western Carolina University gives students a historical view of present-day society through study of how societies around the world have changed. Students may earn a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science, and a minor is offered. The curriculum rests on four subfields: sociocultural, linguistic, archaeology and bioanthropology, and every major picks an elective from each of those categories. Core courses cover the origins of civilization, cross-cultural comparison and the history of anthropological theory. Concentrations include cultural anthropology and forensic anthropology, and students can work at an on-campus outdoor facility for studying human decomposition. The major has thirty-six hours, plus forty-two hours of liberal studies and six hours of language. Students can study full-time or part-time and may add an engaged learning experience.
