The communication major at Western Carolina University lets undergraduates choose a focus from five areas: broadcasting, health communication, journalism, public relations, and interpersonal and cultural communication. Coursework pairs a conventional academic foundation with plenty of practical projects, and students collaborate with faculty and working professionals.
Outside class, students can get involved with the broadcast service, contribute to the department's news website, or join a public relations student society. Learners produce broadcasts, print materials and television programs as part of their experience.
To declare the major, a student needs a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, although newly arriving freshmen and transfers can declare before any GPA is on record, provided they reach that level by the close of their first term. A grade of C or better is expected in every required communication course.
