The Master of Science in mathematical data science trains students to analyse data using mathematical, statistical and computational methods. It is housed in the mathematics department and draws on computer science and business analytics.
Admission in full standing needs the equivalent of a mathematics major and a 3.000 average in mathematics and computing courses. Students lacking some prerequisites may be admitted conditionally.
The 30-credit-hour curriculum has six required courses, including introductions to data analytics, business analytics and data science perspectives, machine learning, a modelling or optimisation course and a capstone. Students then pick two statistical electives, one computing elective and one further elective. Every student must also complete a hands-on or research experience, and the capstone meets that need. Students lacking some prerequisites are admitted conditionally and can catch up.
