The applied mathematics PhD centres on three areas: pure-leaning applied work, statistics, and a blend of mathematics with physics. Students write a dissertation that reports original research in one of them.
Admission calls for a bachelor's in mathematics, statistics or physics that includes calculus beyond the basics, matrix methods, numerical analysis and either modern algebra or the core physics sequence. Applicants need a 3.250 average in those fields and a 3.000 overall, rising to 3.250 for those with a prior master's. The GRE subject test is suggested but not required.
The program requires at least 84 hours of graduate credit, with certain engineering-oriented and lower-level courses excluded. Students also meet language and residency rules and pass qualifying and preliminary examinations before beginning dissertation research.
