AA/AS in Social Work

The Associate of Applied Science in Social Work prepares students for entry into the social work field. Graduates may continue toward a bachelor's degree in social work or stop after the associate degree and assist licensed social workers. With this credential, graduates may work as social work assistants depending on state requirements. Their tasks can include assessment, referral, initial screening, case management support, outreach, prevention services and community programs, in settings such as child welfare, corrections, probation and mental health. The page notes that an associate degree alone does not make someone a social worker. The program is delivered through Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, and its requirements appear in the university's 2026-2027 academic catalog. Prospective students should read the catalog entry and consult the department about advising and course sequencing, since specific course lists, prerequisites and policies are set by the department and may change between catalog editions.
