MA/MS in English Language and Literature, General

This master's program offers courses in creative and professional writing, literary theory and genres, film studies, linguistics and TESOL, and in how to teach literature, language and writing. Students should check in with the program director each semester to have their schedules approved. Graduates may pursue careers in technical, professional and public writing, teaching jobs at home or overseas, and nonprofit or private-sector roles. An English undergraduate degree is not necessary. Applicants submit a statement of purpose and an academic writing sample, and those seeking an assistantship add recommendation letters. Students complete coursework in three categories and may pursue thesis or portfolio options. Graduate certificates in writing, literature teaching and TESOL are also available through the department for those who want a shorter credential.
