Overview
Thorneloe University is a small Anglican institution in Sudbury, Ontario, incorporated by an act of the Ontario Legislature that received Royal Assent on 29 March 1961.
Named for George Thorneloe, Bishop and later Archbishop of the Diocese of Algoma, the university was created by the Diocese to bring a church-affiliated presence to the new academic community forming around Laurentian University. In 1962 Thorneloe formally entered the Laurentian federation alongside Huntington University and the University of Sudbury, and for nearly six decades it taught Laurentian students in departments including Classics and Ancient Studies, Motion Picture Studies, Religious Studies, Theatre Arts, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, while housing students in a 58-room on-campus residence built after the 1964 land agreement with Laurentian.
On 30 March 2021, Laurentian University unilaterally terminated its federation agreements with Thorneloe and its federated partners. All of Thorneloe's departments and programs, and its full- and part-time teaching commitments, came to an end.
Thorneloe continues to operate through its School of Theology, which it has run since the 1990s.
The School offers a Certificate in Theology, a Certificate for Anglican Lay Ministry, a Diploma in Theology, and Bachelor of Theology degrees in both Pastoral and General streaMs. Courses are delivered almost entirely by distance, primarily through correspondence, occasional Zoom sessions, and periodic in-person intensives, serving students located across Northern Ontario, the rest of Canada, and abroad. Thorneloe remains headquartered on the Laurentian University campus in Sudbury.
