Overview Meet the demand for quality professional documentation in the workplace. The Technical Writer Ontario College Graduate Certificate program provides you with the skills and training needed for a career in technical communication. Throughout this one-year program, you create different types of workplace documents to help users enjoy all features of a product, service, or information. In particular, you learn to: research and analyze technical material connect with an intended audience use specialized tools to author documents manage multiple projects to meet the goals of a group create structured documents that cater to different user tasks These skills are so highly prized in the workplace that you can choose to work in either the public or the private sector, and in a freelance, part-time or full-time capacity. The Technical Writer program will teach you how to create different kinds of online and print documents such as instruction sets, training materials, user manuals, white papers, proposals, online help, instructional videos and podcasts. Through a combination of real-world learning, group projects, and collaborative learning activities, you can confidently apply these skills in all areas of industry including manufacturing, health and medicine, government, high-tech and private training institutions. At the end of the program, you will be ready to begin careers as information architects, content developers, technical editors, instructional designers and communication officers.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is post-diploma/post-degree entry: Algonquin requires an Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, or Degree, or equivalent, with a minimum 70% average in at least one English or Writing course. International or non-Canadian transcripts must be assessed through ICAS or WES. This program sets a higher English-proficiency bar than Algonquin's standard postgraduate scale: IELTS Academic overall 7.5 with no band below 7.0, OR TOEFL iBT overall 104 (Reading 26, Listening 26, Speaking 24, Writing 28) for tests before 21 January 2026 (a rescaled overall 5.5, with Reading/Listening/Writing at 5.5 and Speaking at 5, applies to tests from that date), OR Duolingo English Test overall 130 with a minimum of 130 in Literacy and 115 in Production.

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: for September 2027 entry the application portal opens 26 September 2026, the equal consideration date is 1 February 2027, and offers must be accepted by 1 May 2027, while later applications are still assessed as space allows; Algonquin publishes no separate equal-consideration date for the January 2027 intake. International applicants apply directly via Algonquin's own International Application Portal, not ontariocolleges.ca; instead of one fixed date the college posts a program-by-program closing-date list shortly before each term starts - for Fall 2026 most programs closed 16 September 2026, technology programs by 9-10 September; no Winter 2027 or Fall 2027 international list has been posted yet, so admission remains effectively rolling until each list is published and fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
