Overview

The Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing at Athabasca University is a 120-credit undergraduate degree combining online coursework with required on-site practice components. The curriculum is organized into three course clusters: Cluster A covers foundational subjects, Cluster B covers specialized nursing content, and Cluster C consists of a final practicum and preceptorship placement; the program states it requires fewer clinical practice courses than typical bridging programs. Completion typically takes about five years, with a maximum of seven years allowed, and study is self-paced subject to prerequisite requirements for the practice courses. Admission requires Alberta Licensed Practical Nurse status along with 1,700 hours of LPN work experience in Alberta. The curriculum is mapped to the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta's Entry-Level Competencies, and graduates become eligible to apply for RN licensure with the CRNA and to prepare for the NCLEX-RN examination. The degree is designed specifically for Alberta LPNs seeking to advance into registered nursing practice, and completion can also serve as a pathway into further graduate study, such as the university's Master of Nursing program.
