Overview
The After-Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing is intended for students who already hold a university degree in any field of study, on the basis that the critical thinking, analytical, and life-experience skills gained through a prior degree make such applicants strong candidates for a nursing career. The program leads to the same BScN (Collaborative) credential described on the general nursing program page, and can also be completed as a competitive honors variant that includes a research project; a separate bilingual BScN option is offered as well. As with the BScN generally, the degree is a pathway to becoming a Registered Nurse in Canada. The program is delivered through the Faculty of Nursing, which the program page describes as among the top nursing schools in Canada, with clinical placements and instruction housed in the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy, adjacent to the University of Alberta Hospital. The program suits university graduates from any discipline who want to transition into a nursing career through an accelerated, degree-holder entry route rather than a traditional first-entry nursing degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Non-direct entry, after-degree route: applicants must already hold a baccalaureate degree from a recognized institution and an Admission GPA (AGPA) of at least 3.0 or equivalent. Five prerequisite courses are required: English, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Medical Microbiology, and Statistics (3 units each); for admissions effective Fall 2018 onward, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Medical Microbiology each require a minimum grade of C+ and must be completed within 5 years of the BScN start date. English language proficiency is required of all applicants.
