Carpenter is a Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) apprenticeship delivered at Aurora College's Thebacha Campus in Fort Smith, training apprentices to construct, erect, and repair buildings and other structures made of wood, wood substitutes, steel, and other materials, with safety instruction integrated throughout. Technical training runs across four levels, each eight weeks (240 hours) of classroom and shop-based instruction. On completion, apprentices earn a Certificate of Qualification from the GNWT. Entry requires apprentices to be at least 16 years of age, physically capable of performing carpentry work, and registered with the GNWT Apprenticeship Division. Applicants must secure a suitable employer holding a Journeyperson certificate in the carpenter trade, and must achieve an overall average of 70%, with a minimum of 50% in each of mathematics, English, and science, on the Trades Entrance Examination, Cluster #2.
