The Apprenticeship Housing Maintainer program at Aurora College trains registered apprentices to perform preventative and on-demand maintenance, minor repairs, and modernization improvements on the physical structures and components of buildings. Delivered at the Thebacha Campus in Fort Smith, the technical training consists of three levels, each made up of 240 hours (eight weeks) of combined classroom and shop instruction. Between technical training blocks, apprentices complete on-the-job hours with an employer who holds a Journeyperson certificate in the Housing Maintainer trade. Entry requires applicants to be registered as apprentices with the GNWT Department of Education, Culture and Employment, secure a sponsoring employer, and meet the program's Trades Entrance Examination standard covering mathematics, English, and science. On completing all three levels of technical training and the required work-based hours, apprentices receive a Certificate of Qualification from the Government of the Northwest Territories.
