Overview
Native Studies at Brandon University is offered as a three-year or four-year undergraduate degree focused on the academic study of Native cultures and Native peoples of North America. The program is organized into six areas of concentration: Native Languages, Native Humanities (including literature), Native Fine Art, Native Policy and Administration, Native Human Services, and Native Research, allowing students to focus their studies within a particular aspect of the field. Instruction is delivered in person at Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba, where the department was established in 1975 as the first of its kind in western Canada. The program is designed for students seeking an in-depth study of Indigenous cultures, peoples, and related professional fields, and the department also produces resources intended to be of benefit to Native communities, particularly in northern and remote areas.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Native Studies page on Brandon University's site states no admission requirements specific to this program beyond the general undergraduate admission policy referenced there. Entry follows Brandon's general undergraduate requirements: Manitoba high school graduates with no M, I or E designated courses (or a recognized GED/CAEC) receive a conditional offer on submitting the application, fee and transcript; out-of-province Canadian applicants need a minimum 60% average on the province's university-preparatory courses, including English. All applicants whose first language is not English, or who lack at least three years of English-medium secondary or post-secondary study, must meet Brandon's English Language Proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (min. 6.0 per band), TOEFL iBT 86 overall (min. 20 per section), Duolingo English Test 120 overall (min. 105 per component), PTE Academic 58, CAEL 60, or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 overall (min. 170 per component); exemptions include Manitoba Grade 12 English 40S at 70%+, IB Higher Level English 4+, AP English 4+, or Brandon's EAP Tier 4 program.

International applicants must apply earlier: April 1, 2027 for Fall 2027 entry, and August 1, 2027 for the next open Winter window (Winter 2028 entry), since the Winter 2027 international deadline of August 1, 2026 has already passed.
