BCIT's Pediatric Nursing Specialty, Anesthesia Care option, is a part-time, distance-education advanced certificate and the only program of its kind in Canada. Delivered fully online, it prepares registered nurses for the perianesthetic care of children and adolescents undergoing sedation and general anesthesia. The program totals 24.0 credits, beginning with two general pediatric nursing theory courses and a pediatric clinical placement, then progressing into two pediatric anesthesia care theory courses and two preceptorship placements covering preoperative and post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) practice, including thermoregulation, hemodynamic monitoring, pain assessment, and emergence delirium. The program does not require prior pediatric work experience, though experience with children and families is an asset. The program is open to international applicants who can complete it from outside Canada or who hold a valid Canadian work permit for the duration of clinical training, though it is not eligible for a study permit or a Post-Graduation Work Permit. After completing the Advanced Certificate, graduates may continue into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Specialty Nursing.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet BCIT's English language proficiency Category 1 requirement (English Studies 12 at 73% or equivalent), hold a diploma in nursing, and have current practicing registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, a Canadian provincial equivalent, or an RN licence number if practicing outside Canada. The program's own overview states this option does not require relevant work experience, though BCIT's standard entry requirements page lists a minimum of six months of acute care work experience with a resume submitted at application; exceptions may be granted for undergraduate students in entry-level theory courses or new graduates. Prior experience with children and families, such as a pediatric preceptorship, volunteer work, or pediatric employment, is recommended but not required. Clinical requirements include current Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR Level C or Health Care Provider) from a Canadian provider, proof of BCCNM registration or equivalent for each clinical course, and a face respirator fit test with annual re-fitting. International applicants may complete the program from outside Canada or while holding a valid Canadian work permit for the duration of clinical training, but are not eligible for a study permit, and the program does not currently qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
