Overview
This 20-month Diploma of Technology trains students in heavy duty truck technology through four technical terms plus a 15-week paid co-operative work term, delivered full-time at the Annacis Island campus with intakes in January or February. Compared with traditional heavy mechanical trades apprenticeship training, the program allows more instructional time per topic, combining classroom, shop, and online delivery along with training on current manufacturer-level technology; classes run weekday mornings from Tuesday to Friday, allowing scope for part-time work alongside study. Graduates receive credit toward the first three levels of BC's heavy mechanical trades apprenticeship, roughly 900 hours split between coursework and the co-op term, accelerating their path toward Red Seal certification in trades such as truck transport mechanic or diesel engine mechanic. The program suits people with mechanical aptitude, ideally some related industry experience, who can absorb technical material at a faster pace than an entry-level foundation program, and requires English proficiency, math competency, and mechanical reasoning skills at entry.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet Category 3 English proficiency, English Studies 12 at 50% or equivalent, or pass the BCIT English Trades Entry Assessment. Mathematics is met by Pre-Calculus 11, Foundations of Math 11 or Workplace Math 11, each at 50%, or the BCIT Math Trades Entry Assessment. A BCIT Mechanical Reasoning Trades Entry Assessment and a mandatory Applicant Questionnaire submitted with the application are also required; applications are then reviewed by the department and qualified applicants are invited to an informational interview. High school graduation is recommended by SkilledTradesBC but not required, as is twelve months of prior work or industry experience and a valid driver's licence.
