Overview
This apprenticeship prepares automotive service technicians through General Motors' Automotive Service Educational Program, combining classroom instruction with paid work experience at GM dealerships. The program spans two years across five levels, alternating five- to eight-week classroom terms with nine-week blocks of workplace experience, for a total of 1,200 in-school hours and 7,200 workplace hours; classes run weekday mornings at the Burnaby campus. Instructors are trained by General Motors, and GM supplies current vehicles and training equipment so that coursework tracks the latest dealership technology. The curriculum covers electrical systems, air conditioning, fuel systems, drivelines, engines, powertrains, steering, suspension, brakes, computer-assisted systems, and body and trim work. On completion and passing the interprovincial exam, graduates earn a BC Certificate of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification with Red Seal interprovincial certification. Entry requires sponsorship and employment by a GM dealer, registration with SkilledTradesBC, high school graduation, and a minimum grade of C in Math 11, making it suited to apprentices already committed to a GM-specific technician career path.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need high-school graduation with English 12 or demonstrated English-language proficiency, and any Math 11 at a minimum C, and must pass BCIT's own Trades Entry Assessment. Enrolment further requires being an active apprentice registered with SkilledTradesBC, employment with a General Motors dealer, and sponsorship by that dealer under a signed apprenticeship contract with the Ministry of Advanced Education; a valid driver's licence is conditional on the dealership role. No IELTS, TOEFL or other standardized English test score is published for this apprenticeship. Applicants must maintain academic and attendance standards and participate in all learning activities throughout training. Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible; the program has no international intake.

Application Deadline:BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
