Overview
This four-year apprenticeship trains technicians to install, repair, maintain, replace, calibrate, and program process monitoring and control instruments used in pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic, and digital industrial systems. In-school training totals 1,200 hours across four ten-week levels at the Burnaby campus, delivered in a facility built to operate like a real industrial plant, with roughly half of instruction time spent on hands-on practice; apprentices also complete 6,000 required workplace hours, and multiple intakes are offered annually. On completion, apprentices earn a BC Certificate of Apprenticeship, a BC Certificate of Qualifications, and the Interprovincial Standard (Red Seal) Endorsement. The program suits candidates with existing knowledge of pneumatics, electropneumatics, hydraulics, electricity, and electronics, along with attention to detail, manual dexterity, and problem-solving ability; a background in Physics 11 and mathematics is recommended. Graduates typically work in pulp and paper, hydroelectric, mining, petrochemical, natural gas, and industrial manufacturing sectors requiring precise process instrumentation and control expertise.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must be an active apprentice registered with SkilledTradesBC. BCIT recommends, without strictly requiring, high-school completion with English 12 or demonstrated language proficiency, Applications of Math 11 or Principles of Math 11, and Physics 11; no standardized English test score is published for this trade. Apprentices entering beyond Level 1 must pass BCIT's safety-training assessments, both theory and practical, before advancing. Graduates of other instrumentation-and-control programs may be granted credit for up to three apprenticeship levels after passing a slotting exam for each level. Candidates need good health, hearing, eyesight and hand-eye coordination for the work, with Accessibility Services available for medical or physical concerns, and training is open only to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Application Deadline:BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
