Overview

Applied Linguistics is a Bachelor of Arts offered by Brock University's Faculty of Social Sciences, examining how language is used, learned, processed and taught, and its influence in fields such as education, health, law and business. Students learn to analyze language data and apply scientific reasoning to language-based issues through case-based projects, clinical observation and hands-on labs. Two majors are offered: Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, covering language and literacy acquisition, speech physiology, and the characteristics, causes, assessment and intervention of communication disorders; and Applied Linguistics/Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), covering theories and methods of teaching English as a second language with practice teaching in an ESL classroom, leading to eligibility for TESL Ontario Certification. Students may also choose to learn American Sign Language or take electives such as Language and Power or Bilingualism. Related credentials include certificates in Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology or TESL, and a Minor in Applied Linguistics. Career paths include editing and publishing, speech-language pathology, audiology, communications and ESL education.
