The Doctor of Philosophy in Communication at Carleton University is an interdisciplinary program examining communication as a contested concept shaped by differing intellectual traditions, societal contexts, and historical developments. Students conduct critical and reflexive research across eight specialization fields: Crisis and Risk, Visual Culture, Big Data, Digital Media, Activism and Social Movements, Media Industries, Political Economy, and Identity. Candidates complete coursework alongside independent research culminating in a doctoral dissertation supervised by faculty within the School of Journalism and Communication. The nominal full-time length of the program is five years, with an annual intake in the Fall term. Graduates are prepared for academic careers as well as research, policy, and media-related roles that draw on advanced expertise in communication theory and methods.
