Overview

Techniques de physiotherapie (code 144.A1) is a Diploma of College Studies (DEC) offered by Cegep de l'Abitibi-Temiscamingue at its Rouyn-Noranda campus, training physiotherapy technologists. Admission requires Physics from the fifth year of Quebec secondary school (Physique 5e). The curriculum combines coursework with employment-based internships and prepares graduates to work alongside physiotherapists and other health professionals in public health institutions such as hospitals, day centres, local community service centres (CLSC), long-term care centres (CHSLD), and rehabilitation centres, as well as in private clinics and seniors' residences. Students learn to carry out patient assessments to establish treatment plans and to apply a range of treatment techniques, including therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, and thermotherapy, under the direction of a physiotherapist. Course content addresses clients across the lifespan, including people recovering from motor-vehicle or workplace accidents, those experiencing a loss of autonomy, sports injuries, or conditions such as Parkinson's disease and stroke. Graduates typically work as physiotherapy technologists. The program suits students who want to help people recover physical function, are comfortable with hands-on patient contact, and can work with initiative and analytical judgment within an interdisciplinary health-care team.
