Program details
Overview
Soins prehospitaliers d'urgence (code 181.A1) is a Diploma of College Studies (DEC) offered by Cegep de l'Abitibi-Temiscamingue at its Val-d'Or campus, training paramedics to respond to medical emergencies. The program includes employment-based internships and has no specific secondary-school subject prerequisite, but sets particular admission conditions: candidates must hold a valid probationary or class 5 driver's licence, provide medical proof meeting the hiring and class 4A licence standards, submit a certificate of good conduct if 18 or older, and complete a series of mandatory base vaccinations; candidates with a criminal record may be denied access to internship placements. Students train to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, stabilize accident victims, transport patients, and assist people in psychological distress, in settings ranging from forested and remote areas to private residences, seniors' residences, and mining, forestry, and manufacturing worksites — wherever a medical emergency can occur. Graduates work as paramedics (technicien ambulancier paramedical). The program suits students who act with initiative, sound judgment, and composure under pressure, show empathy, work well in a team, and want a hands-on role built around helping people in urgent situations.
Requirements
