Overview

Arts, lettres et communication, option Littérature et création, is a pre-university DEC built around a solid literary foundation, complemented by exposure to related cultural fields such as film, art history, and theatre. The option has three main components: a literature strand covering crime and science-fiction novels, comics, song, literature of the Americas, and foreign literature; a critical strand examining myth in literature, representations of the hero, and literary theory; and a creative-writing strand delivered through two creative-writing courses and a poetry course. The program is enriched by encounters with writers, journalists, comic-book artists, and bloggers, and the college holds an annual «Semaine des arts» featuring guests from the cultural community. Students can take part in the Pour l'instant literary creation contest and an intercollegiate literary and artistic publications event, along with reading activities tied to province-wide student literary and comics awards. Placements abroad, including in Berlin and San Francisco, are also organized. Students complete a collection of their own texts as the program's culminating project. It suits students planning university studies in literature, writing, or communications who want to develop as both readers and creative writers.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The program states no specific course prerequisite for admission beyond the Diplôme d'études secondaires (DES). As with all Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe programs, admission is processed through SRAM (admission.sram.qc.ca); a Diplôme d'études secondaires (DES) is the general entry basis. Applicants whose Secondary 5 written French mark was 65% or below and whose overall average was under 75% are placed in the upgrading course 601-013-HY before taking program-level French; a French-mastery test is required at application for those who did not take regular Secondary 5 French or who studied outside Quebec, and applicants from outside Quebec whose mother tongue is not French must submit an approved international French test (the Cégep recommends Bright) with their SRAM file. Every admitted student also sits an English placement test that sets their starting English course level.
