Overview
The Institut de technologie agroalimentaire du Québec (ITAQ) is a public, French-language, college-level institute devoted entirely to agriculture and agri-food, operating under Quebec's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ).
Its Saint-Hyacinthe campus, in the Montérégie region southeast of Montréal, traces its lineage to Canada's first dairy school, founded in the city in 1892; a provincial institute of agricultural technology followed in 1962, merged with the La Pocatière institute in 2003, and on July 1, 2021 the ITAQ became an autonomous public institution. It is the only French-language college-level establishment in Quebec specialized exclusively in agri-food.
The institute teaches seven three-year technical DEC programs across its two campuses; six are offered at Saint-Hyacinthe, spanning farm business management, animal production, agricultural machinery, landscaping, environmental horticulture, and food processing and quality. Students train in extensive applied facilities, including the Maskita teaching farm with 75 hectares of land for dairy and beef production, a horticultural pavilion, a complex of 26 greenhouses and 6 large field tunnels, pilot food-processing plants for vegetable, meat, dairy and bakery products, and machinery workshops.
Instruction is entirely in French, and applicants without prior francophone schooling must pass a recognized French test.
Applications for the Saint-Hyacinthe campus go through the SRAM regional admission service, with the first round closing March 1; international candidates apply between September 1 and February 1 and pay tuition of CAD 11,398 per session in 2025-2026, with every admission file automatically considered for the institute's full or 50% tuition-exemption scholarships.
