This diploma of college studies (DEC) in ophthalmic optics trains students to work as opticians dispensing prescription eyewear and contact lenses. Coursework covers analyzing eyeglass prescriptions to propose precise, personalized vision solutions, advising clients on frame and lens selection, fitting and troubleshooting contact lenses, and adjusting, repairing, and manufacturing eyeglasses using specialized optical measurement equipment. The curriculum combines health-science courses such as eye anatomy, microbiology, and ocular pathology with client-service, sales, and professional-ethics training. Students train in small-group laboratories and at the program's on-campus teaching clinic, Lunetterie Garneau, which stocks more than 1,000 eyewear frames. The program runs over six sessions and offers an accelerated five-session option for students who have already completed general-education coursework or hold a DEC. Training concludes with a final internship of at least 270 hours, which can be completed at partner sites throughout Quebec. Graduates are prepared to work as licensed opticians dispensing eyewear and contact lenses.
