Program details

Overview

Paralegal Technology (Techniques juridiques, program code 310.C0) is a technical Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC) offered by Cégep Garneau in Quebec City, completed over a regular six sessions or, for students who have already finished at least eight general education courses, an accelerated five-session track. The program trains legal technicians to interpret legislation and apply it to concrete situations, covering civil, penal and administrative procedure, family law, property transmission and consumer contract law, alongside practical skills in legal research using specialized databases, document drafting, file management and court-procedure preparation, and training in legal software, word processing and property or personal-rights registry systems. Teaching staff include practising notaries and lawyers. Students complete two work placements: a familiarization stage in the second year and a fifteen-week full-time capstone internship. The program suits students interested in supporting legal professionals rather than practising law, preparing graduates for roles in law firms, notary and bailiff offices, courthouse registries and government legal departments, with a possible pathway into university law programs.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must first meet Cégep Garneau's general collegial admission conditions: under Quebec's Règlement sur le régime des études collégiales, holding a Diplôme d'études secondaires (DES) from the youth or adult sector, or equivalent training recognized by the college, with conditional admission possible when at most six DES credits remain outstanding, completed in the applicant's first college semester. Techniques juridiques additionally requires the applicant to have passed Mathematics – CST from Secondary 4; entry to the accelerated five-session stream further requires the applicant to have already passed at least eight general-education courses, with school-record quality as the selection criterion for that stream. No French or English proficiency test score is published. About 150 students are admitted each fall, with selection based on the school record applied only if eligible applications exceed the places available.
