Program details

Overview

Automotive Fundamentals is a one-year, two-semester Ontario College Certificate program (Motive Power Fundamentals, program code 8208) delivered at Centennial College's Ashtonbee Campus. The curriculum is organized across fourteen courses covering electrical systems and diagnosis, engine systems and components, steering, suspension and brakes, drivelines and fuel and emissions systems, and an introduction to electric and hybrid vehicles, alongside communications, mathematics and workplace professional skills. Instruction combines classroom study with hands-on lab work on vehicle systems and diagnostic equipment. On graduation, students receive credit for Level 1 in-school apprenticeship training, meaning they can begin work as an automotive service technician apprentice without repeating that classroom-based apprenticeship component. Graduates may enter the workforce directly in dealerships, independent service shops and retail automotive settings, or transfer into the second year of Centennial's Automotive Motive Power diploma to continue toward a full diploma credential; a transfer pathway to Nipissing University is also available. The certificate suits students seeking a fast, practical entry point into automotive service careers, as well as those planning to continue into the apprenticeship-track diploma.
